African Cemetery No. 2 is the oldest Black organized, owned, and managed burial ground in Lexington, Kentucky. It includes the graves of African American veterans of the Civil War, Indian Wars, and the War of 1898. So far, the most documented graves are those of persons associated with the thoroughbred racing industry (an indication of Lexington's priorities). Indeed, there are probably more Kentucky Derby winning jockeys interred here than in any other spot of ground.
