During our DC Thanksgiving, we had the opportunity to visit the Mount Zion/Female Union Band Cemetery, Georgetown's African American burial ground. Neglected for most of the 20th century, its significance has now been recognized, and the process of restoration and preservation has begun. Many of the gravestones memorialize lives that began in the 1830s, 40s, and 50s and that ended in the 20th century, persons who traversed the path from Slavery to Freedom.
