The fourth concert of the Friends of Chamber Music season featured Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim and colleagues Priscilla Lee, Ricardo Morales, and Jeffrey DeVault.
The concert was dedicated to the memory of our dear friend Jake Krumholz, and was supported in part by the William Davidson Foundation. In addition to the marvelous musical performances, the WCR displayed a group of photographs by Jake and of his remarkable woodworking.
The following tribute was included in the program:

Remembering Jacob Krumholz

The Friends of Chamber Music of Reading was awarded a generous grant last year by the prestigious William Davidson Foundation in memory of Jacob Krumholz. Jake died in the fall of 2015. When his widow Arlene was asked how the foundation might honor Jake’s memory, she suggested a donation to FOCM. Krumholz and Davidson were among four lifelong college friends from the University of Michigan.
Jake was a man larger than life with a twinkle in his eye and wonderful sense of humor. He always loved fixing and making things while growing up in Brooklyn New York. The first woodworking bench made in his youth is in his woodworking shop to this day.
An early interest in music and clarinet lessons almost led him to study music at the Juilliard School. However, pragmatism ultimately led him to degrees in industrial engineering and business. He did not give up music; among his great thrills during college was participating in the University of Michigan’s renowned marching band. Service in the military interrupted his schooling during World War II but eventually he moved to Reading to join his father in managing a lingerie factory. Several reincarnations found him next a retail merchant (in the heyday of the Reading outlets) and thereafter an award winning custom home-builder.
This multifaceted man also took and developed wonderful photographs.
There will be a photographic exhibition at the WCR for the duration of January 2017, of, by and about Jake. They reflect his great passions – his wife and children, music and the clarinet, and exquisite woodworking .
